Comments

In 2006, chromium emissions in mainland France were estimated by 40 t, a fall of 90% compared to the level of 1990.

Among the different sectors, just three of them contribute to the emissions of this pollutant in mainland France in 2006, including one mainly :

  • manufacturing industry : 68% of the emissions,
  • residential/tertiary : 25%,
  • energy conversion : 7%.

The other sectors did not contribute (agriculture/forestry, road transport, all transports except road and LULUCF (UTCF in French)).

In the manufacturing industry sector, chromium emissions mainly come from iron and steel (mostly electric furnace steel plant) with a contribution of 67% of total emissions in 2006 in mainland France , and also some of the glass industries (14%). The drop observed since 1990 in this sector (-93%, i.e. a diminution of 339 t) is mainly due to electric furnace steel plants being fitted with dust extractors and their improvement in efficiency.

Moreover, traces of chromium found in fuels cause relatively low levels of emissions during the combustion process, compared to the sources mentioned above.
