Comments
Total copper emissions in 2008 in mainland France amounted to 165 t.
The two main sources were road transport and other transports with respectively 53% and 35% of copper emissions in 2008.
Emissions from road transport entirely come from break wear, whereas the emissions from the other transports sector come essentially from railways and particularly from the wear and tear of trolley wires. The increase observed in those two sectors since 1990 is due to the expansion of the fleet and is respectively 28% and 22%.
Other sources which contributed to total copper emissions in 2008, albeit to a lesser extent, are :
- manufacturing industry : 7%,
- residential/tertiary : 3%,
- energy conversion : 2%,
- agriculture/forestry : 0.1%.
These emissions were relatively stable during the 1990-2008 period.
A decrease of 71% has been observed in the sector of manufacturing industry since 1990 (-31 t). This is mainly due to electric furnace steel plants being fitted with dust extractors and their improvement in efficiency.
