Sources of the pollutant

Nitrogen trifluoride is used in the manufacturing of semi-conductors, new generation solar panels, flat-screen television sets, touch-sensitive screens, electronic processors.
The use of NF3 has widely increased in the past because of two factors. On the one hand, the rising demand in microelectronics results in an ever-increasing quantity of NF3 used. On the other hand, since air emission levels of NF3 were for a long time considered as being almost non-existent, this gas was proposed by industry as an alternative to PFCs, the use of which was restricted because of their significant contribution to the greenhouse effect.

 

Effect of the pollutant

NF3 contributes to the greenhouse effect. It has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 17 200, i.e. 17 200 times the GWP of CO2, the reference greenhouse gas (GWP CO2 = 1) (GWP values from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s fourth assessment report published in 2007). The NF3 is a "new" pollutant covered by the Kyoto Protocol's second commitment period (2013-2020 ) which has been added to the "basket" of six original greenhouse gases targeted by the Kyoto Protocol (CO2, CH4, HFCs, PFCs, SF6).
