Assessing Armenia’s LULUCF Mitigation potential

Citepa, in consortium with ONFi, carried out in 2021 a study of the mitigation potential of LULUCF sector actions for Armenia. The project consisted in producing 3 reports, an inventory of knowledge, a technical report and a political note. For this project a new tool was developed to test the impact of LULUCF actions. In Armenia, the main actions identified are linked to afforestation/reforestation policies as the forest has been severely degraded in recent years. The main causes of degradation are the exploitation of wood for energy purposes combined with climate aridification and to a lesser extent soil degradation by livestock. Actions to limit deforestation, on the other hand, have a low impact because the forest area is currently very small.
